So here we are...currently 27 weeks pregnant with the little one, halfway across the world. Where has the time gone? I, as always, had great intentions for updating the blog on a more regular basis but another couple of months have flown by and I've not written a jot about the whole pregnancy until now. All the books tell you to take lots of photos and write a diary because as soon as the little one enters the world, the actual pregnancy will fade into insignificance. So that is what I have done. Probably more for Bob and I to look back on, but read if you wish! xx
First trimester
Week 2-4
Spontaneously throw up. Falling asleep on the sofa after dinner. Hmm. Despite having an inkling that I may be pregnant, I decide that it would be fine to continue with pre-season netball training although doing 8 intensive interval training laps of the BMX track alongside multiple circuit exercises makes me feel quite sick. Suddenly decide that my raised core temperature may not be ideal conditions for a collection of cells to develop and freak myself out. Might be time to stop the high intensity stuff and find out if I am indeed pregnant or not! Voila, yes I am. No more netball for me and to be honest, just don't feel like running. Anyone for yoga?
Week 5-8
Just when I was starting to wonder what all the fuss was about with regards to morning sickness, I start to get this horrible queasy feeling that unfortunately doesn't want to go away. At all. The feeling is pretty similar to that of a hangover, but doesn't budge with a hit of Coca-Cola and a bacon sandwich. In fact, couldn't think of anything worse that I'd want to eat. And I still have to go to work like this? Opt for a day in bed and then spend the whole day feeling guilty for not being at work. I hate being pregnant.
My body decides that all it is eating is yoghurt, smoothies and McChicken sandwiches. I can't even look at a green vegetable. The worst point is having to accept a cold curried egg vol-au-vent at a neighbours house, just to be polite. Cue Bob to the rescue!
Cry. Lots.
First scan reveals a little tiny person in there. Very very excited!
Week 9-12
The queasiness continues and decide to make a regular date with the bathroom every morning at 9.30am. At this point I have convinced myself that I will be one of those pregnant people that will be constantly sick for 9 months. Might have to consider jumping off a bridge......until week 10 arrives and suddenly, things start looking up! HURRAH! Keep the broccoli away though, we're not over that hurdle just yet. Pass the yoghurt over here. Bob is trying his best to cook up something nice for dinner once I've decided on what I'd like, only to decide that it is the complete opposite of what I would like once it appears on my plate! Bob has patience of a saint. Yes, eggs again would be lovely. Bedtime 9.30pm thank you very much. When does 'the glow' get here???
Second Trimester
Week 13-16
Cue hormones. Cry. Have a mental breakdown. Cry. Then feel enormously happy and full of beans. I love being pregnant! Time to start exercising and so I enrol in some pregnancy spin and circuit classes. Make friends with Salt'n'Vinegar crisps and have a spell of eating pickled onions. Yummy
Week 17-20
Bump is definitely growing; first random person to notice was the cashier in the bank, who then proceeded to ask how long I had to go.....immediately sucked in my tummy! Time to shop for some new clothes (bonus) and love stretchy jumper dresses and leggings. I can't even contemplate squeezing into those skinny jeans. Start to feel some weird fluttery sensations week 17 when driving and at work and wonder if this is the baby moving or just me imagining things? Turns into bubbles over the next couple of weeks and seems to happen when Bob and I are in the car together. This little one likes transportation.
Bob and I decide it is time to investigate strollers/prams and enter a whole new world of gadgets. Of course, I am a total sucker for sales people and fall in love with the most expensive one that costs the same as a Ford Ka. Do we really need that cup holder?
20 week scan reveals our little bub facing us, giving us a wave before rolling onto her other side so we can check out her spine. All is well. Even though we have decided not to find out the sex of the baby, I ask several times if the sonographer knows the gender and then proceed to watch the DVD for any little clues. Thought I had found something until Bob told me I was being rather optimistic about the size!!! Hmph. Will just have to wait
Feeling great, enjoying being pregnant.
Week 21-24
The only downside to pregnancy at this stage is heartburn. Seems like I'm swigging antacid from the bottle several times each day and cannot sleep lying down which makes me feel like a granny propped up on 5 pillows or so. Wake up with sore neck every morning and have to do the equivalent of a 3 point turn in bed just to roll over. Where have my abs gone? Time to give up yoga as I simply cannot keep up with the class, and poor Stacey has to give me alternatives to lying on my tummy. Opt for 5km walks 3x week and my pregnancy DVD. Bob quite happy to watch the hot American blonde chick while I sweat it out in the living room!
Felt the baby kick for the first time 7th June, Friday night after work. Bob was out unfortunately but it was very cool, I put my hand on my tummy and got my fingers tapped out of the way. Loved it. Bob felt her later that night which was lovely. Suddenly it all becomes real! Eating normally now and cannot get enough of chocolate and sweet things. Bio-Oil is my new best friend and it seems to be keeping any stretch marks at bay, hurrah. Starting to feel numbness in my left hand intermittently throughout the day and pray that it is not the beginning of carpal tunnel, as might be a bit tricky to work. Bump is kicking away at 830pm each night, Bob feeling lots of kicks too, think she is having a party for one in there.
Week 25-27
Patients at work are starting to realise there is a baby hiding underneath my horrendously baggy work shirt! In-laws arrive at the weekend and Granny Barr feels her kicking away : ) Curry club keeps the antacids on-call and the delivery of UK Dairy Milk is perfect timing as my rations had just run out! Much appreciated.
6 days in Port Douglas was bliss. Enjoyed our vitamin D fix and some swimming although one swim in a freezing cold gorge made me think that the little one would require some defrosting afterwards. The bump managed two flights, a choppy Catamaran sail, snorkelling and a river boat cruise in croc infested waters. Quite adventurous for someone yet to be born! Found out she doesn't like card games but seems to enjoy posh restaurants. Mocktails galore. Lovely.
On the downside, must get these numb tingling weak hands sorted out - physio appointment required please!
